Six things that turn an electrical job into an expensive or dangerous one, and what we do instead.
A bigger breaker "fixes" the tripping
The single most dangerous thing an unlicensed fundi does. A breaker that keeps tripping is reporting a real fault or a real overload. Fitting a larger one does not make the cable behind it any thicker. It only removes the protection that was telling you the truth.
There is no earth worth the name
Either no electrode was ever installed or it corroded away years ago. Everything else in the installation depends on it, including every surge protector anyone has sold you since. We measure earth resistance and record the reading rather than assuming it.
Solar sold on panels, not on batteries
The array is the visible part and the cheap part. A lead-acid bank quoted to hit a price point is worn out in two or three years and costs more to replace than the original saving. Ask for battery chemistry and warranted cycle count, not panel wattage.
The generator was never load-tested
The engine gets run monthly and everybody assumes the system works. The transfer switch, the part that actually has to operate, has not been exercised under load in years. We have attended buildings where it failed for the first time in five years, in the dark.
Cable sized for load but not for distance
On a Karen or Runda plot the run from the meter to the house can be very long. Sized correctly for the load and incorrectly for the length, it delivers voltage drop that shows up as dimming lights and motors running hot, and gets blamed on the supply.
The deposit disappears
Taken up front, work abandoned part-finished, phone unanswered. We work to staged payments against milestones with an M-Pesa receipt at every stage, so you are never far out of pocket relative to what has actually been done.

- Something smells like burning. What do I do first?
- Switch off at the main breaker before anything else, and do not open the board. Do not reset a breaker that has already tripped twice. It tripped for a reason. Then call us; we answer 24 hours a day.
- How fast can you get here?
- We aim to have an EPRA-licensed electrician with you within 90 minutes across central Nairobi. Gated estates in Karen and Runda add gate clearance time, and Gigiri properties may need vetting arranged in advance. We will give you a realistic time on the call.
- What does a callout cost?
- KES 1,500–2,500 in business hours, deducted from the invoice if you go ahead. Out of hours is higher and we tell you the figure on the phone before we set off, never on arrival.
- Half my house has power and half does not. What is that?
- On a three-phase supply that is usually a lost phase rather than anything inside your house. Switch off anything with a three-phase motor (a lift, a borehole pump, air conditioning plant) because running on two phases destroys them within minutes.
- Are you licensed?
- Yes. EPRA licenses the contracting business and the individual electrician separately, and we show you both, along with our NCA registration and public liability cover. All of it goes out in writing with the quotation so you can verify it before work starts.
- Will I get a test certificate?
- Yes, on every job that changes an installation, with the actual readings on it: insulation resistance, earth fault loop impedance and RCD trip times. You need it at sale, at insurance renewal and after any incident.
